I douubt many her willl have heard of Cardiacs but they were one of the few bands that really got into my bones and I was privieged to be in a band that supported a couple of times.
He was a uniquely British songwriter of a genre all his own.
Not my quote but "We have lost the Home Counties Beefheart" sums it up.

A very sad loss, I was lucky enough to see them a good few times, one of my best ever gigs is still a top night at the Clarendon in '85 Ten Pole Tudor, Cardiacs, Blyth Power and The Janitors an outstanding gig, and unfortunately Tim's original episode occurred uncomfortably close to him seeing My Bloody Valentine play an unbelievably loud set

I unfortunately got into Cardiacs after their touring days. Sing to God is a near perfect album.

Cheers. Orange are one of the brands I haven't tried. I am currently experimenting with Zilla cabs who make anything you want including removable back panels so you can use them open or closed back. Have 3 I use in different combinations depending on the gig.
SunnO))) are bonkers. The only band you can see live, miss the first three songs and only miss hearing three chords. :)
I think the loudest band I have seen (other than Motorhead of course), are My Bloody Valentine. Strangely Deep Purple were also uncomfortably loud. It was mainly the Hammond which must cover frequencies my ears are particularly sensitive to?
Trying to preserve what's left of my hearing these days. :)

Orange open backs might do the trick for you. They fire a lot of volume out the back to spread around off whatever wall you park it in front of.

I have seen a couple of bands that REALLY do that. SunnO))) and Sleep both at the Concord 2 in Brighton. Google their backlines, it is staggering.
I thought Motorhead were loud until I saw SunnO))). Your entire body vibrates.

That's something I've always been a bit envious about with bass when there isn't much going through the PA. The sound always seems to spread out better.
I've experimented with countless guitar set-ups over the years, but you don't seem to be able to get away from guitar cabs being really directional. People are going deaf standing in front of it while those to the sides say they can barely hear it.
I have thought about experimenting with perspex screens round the amps a la Joe Bonamassa, but I feel turning up with those for a pub gig would be a bit wank?

It also meant you could really fill the room on backline alone. I had a trace Eliot 300W head and usually played with a 4x10 but used to hire a Fender 2x15 as extra low end oomph off Rockbottom for the night when we played the Cartoon.
Man that was fucking loud.

And yes the ceiling in the Cartoon was really low. On a good night you could see the sweat condensing on the walls.

I seem to remember a really low ceiling in the Cartoon? Probably added to the heat in there.
I can't recall ever playing anywhere else in Croydon but I did get a couple of guitars from Rockbottom. :)

I played at the Cartoon a lot too. Started supporting the Hamsters and eventually headlined a few times. One of the sweatiest venues I have ever played but always rammed.
The band I was in that supported Cardiacs used to play at The Star regularly. They only charged Ł50 to rent out the back room and once we'd sorted a PA (we used the same guy every time as he both had a decent rig and was a great sound man) you could charge three quid on the door and we made a fair bit on those ones as we could pack that room out.

Good to hear that. Have supported many in the past who thought they were 'it' when they usually weren't!
Glad that the crowd were open minded too. I imagine that they attracted a fair number of die-hards that might have given ANY support a hard time.
Can't recall playing at The Underground. We must have played The Cartoon in Croydon countless times, often with Paddy Goes To Holyhead or one of their many offshoots.

They didn't play it live for years. I was in a band with their drummer, Bob Leith, for a year or so and asked him about it but he told me that Tim said it would be impossible to do justice to live.
Lo and behold a year later they bloody well did in spades.

Supporting them was a breeze. I was a bit overawed whe we shared a dressing room with them the first time but Tim said hello, the crowd really got into our songs (punky psych) and after our set with them all changed into their Salvation Army gear Tim and Sarah came over and said they really liked our set and we chatted while their crew cleared our gear off the stage.
Next time we played that venue (Croydon Underground) we were asked to support them again and chatted with Tim and Sarah again "glad to have you back".

The Cardiacs are probably the best band you've never even heard of.
One of the best comments I read after hearing this news was "if you asked every Cardiacs fan to list their top 100 songs from the band, they'd all disagree."

The first time was as support to Marillion.

Wow. I would have thought supporting Cardiacs was one of the toughest support slots to play?
They were amazing. Not always easy to listen to but the musicianship and songwriting was utterly incredible. I never saw them live which is a big regret now.
